The application process

We’ve worked hard to make every stage of our application process fair and inclusive, so you're assessed on your skills, strengths, and motivation – nothing more, nothing less.

Our process is simple and consistent across all schemes, with the key differences being the deadlines - so be sure to keep track of the date for your chosen scheme.

As part of our commitment to inclusive hiring, we don't ask for CVs. Instead, we focus on your potential, assessing your strengths, values and motivations. Each step is designed to help us get to know you, and for you to get to know us, so we can be sure we're the right fit for each other.

We'll keep you in the look with feedback and updates, so you'll always know how you're progressing.

At Virgin Media O2, we’re committed to using technology responsibly to enhance our recruitment process. However, we do not use Generative AI, or AI models trained on external datasets, to make decisions about candidates. Our goal is to be transparent and fair, and we encourage applicants to take the same approach so we can see your originality and authenticity!

FAQs

Got questions? We've got the answers. Here's the extra info you might be looking for.

Our schemes cover roles right across Virgin Media O2. So, whether you want to work in engineering, digital, business, or with customers, there’s an apprenticeship for you.
No. You have to be over 16 to apply but there's no upper age limit. However, some apprenticeships do require a full UK driving licence so be sure to check the requirements for the role you're interested in.
One of the great things about apprenticeships is that around 20% of your time is dedicated to studying towards a nationally recognised qualification. These can include:

- GCSE qualifications in English, Maths and IT

- National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) from level 2 (similar to five GCSEs) up to level 5 (similar to a postgraduate degree)

- Technical qualifications including BTECs or City and Guild Progression Awards

- Academic qualifications including a Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND) foundation degree or the equivalent of a full bachelor’s degree

There are four:

- Intermediate apprenticeships (Level 2) are equivalent to five good GCSE passes

- Advanced apprenticeships (Level 3) are equivalent to two A-level passes

- Higher apprenticeships (Level 4 or 5) are equivalent to the first stages of a degree (known as a foundation degree)

- Degree apprenticeships (Level 6 or 7) give you a qualification similar to a bachelor’s or master’s degree

All our apprenticeships lead to permanent roles on completion of the scheme, along with a salary uplift to reflect your new skills and experience.
For sure. We want to see you at your best and will support you however we can. We’ll make sure you understand the role and what the scheme involves – and if you’re invited to an assessment centre, we’ll give you coaching to help you get ready for any exercises.
Every apprenticeship is different – some involve staying with one team, while others might offer the chance to move around. The best way to find out what’s involved is to check the job advert for all the details!
Whether it’s help with your studies, getting to grips with the job, or something on the social side, you’ll have a whole network of support to call on whenever you need it. This includes:

- Your line manager, who’ll provide day-to-day support and guidance around your role

- An Apprenticeship Development Coach, who’ll help you keep on track with your academic learning

- The Future Careers Team, who are there to make sure you get the best overall experience possible

- The Future Careers Committee, made up of graduates, interns, and other apprentices like you, who’ll have socials, development courses, podcasts, speaker events, and plenty of other projects for you to learn from and get involved in

A parent's guide to apprenticeships

Moving on from full-time education is a big step. And if you're a parent or guardian, you're going to want to know the young person in your life is heading in the right direction. Here's the intel on everything apprenticeships have to offer, so you can help them decide on the best way to go.

Applicants must be over 16, although some schemes may have additional requirements, such as our Field Technician roles which requires you to be at least 17 as they involve driving. Mostly what we want to see is a genuine enthusiasm for learning and an eagerness to continue studying while working. No one should feel excluded from joining our journey. That’s why we’ve worked hard to create a fair and inclusive application process.

What does someone learn on an apprenticeship?

What can be learnt on an apprenticeship?

More than you could know. Around 20% of your time will be dedicated to off-the-job learning to achieve your apprenticeship qualification. This time is paid and forms part of your working week, so there’s no stress trying to fit study around work.

For the rest of the week, our apprentices work within a real-life team, building skills and expanding their knowledge. Each scheme is built around a structured development programme that ensures apprentices walk away with a solid mix of specialist and transferable skills.

  • What happens at the end of the apprenticeship?

All our apprentices go on to permanent roles within our business when they complete their scheme. That means no job hunting, CV stress or interview prepping. Many of our apprentices stay within the team and role they've been training in. Others, however, take the opportunity to branch into a different area of our business. Rest assured, we'll work with every apprentice to get them where they want to be.

  • Does doing an apprenticeship affect your earning potential?

Definitely not! Our salaries vary by level, so depending on the scheme an apprentice's starting salary is between £24,000 and £30,000. And there are opportunities to progress throughout. What's more, we cover all their tuition too.

  • What is the application process?

Tests. Interviews. Assessment centres. It might sound scary – but our process is designed to bring out the best in people, not pile on the pressure! We keep in touch, so candidates feel supported and ready to showcase their strengths. Our Future Careers team are on hand every day, call on 01635 888 358 to discuss the process in more detail.
